What’s the deal on gun stores being closed?
Across the country the debate about gun stores being an ‘Essential’ business is being had. It seems this is just one more ‘red politics’ vs ‘blue politics’ debate. The NY Times published a pretty good article covering both sides of the discussion. Locally, the best advice is to just call the range/shop as their open/closed status may change daily.
At the time of this post:
- Eagle1 is open to the public with adjusted closing hours
- Personal Defense & Handgun Safety Center is providing curbside service for online orders
- Triangle Shooting Academy is closed until further notice

The News & Observer reports that Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker has suspended pistol & concealed carry permit applications until April 30 as demand has recently surged for these permits. (Time for a new Sheriff!)
What guns can I buy without a permit?
You only need a permit to purchase a pistol. You do not need a permit to purchase rifles & shotguns, all you need is a current & valid NC state issued for of ID. But you’ll also need to pass a background check at the time of purchase. Armslist.com is a great resource at this time.
Are shotguns good for home defense?
They are fabulous home defense weapons! For home defense shotguns the type of ammo is more important than whether it’s a 12 or 20 gauge. 12 & 20 gauges both have their pros & cons (12 gauges have more pros) but it’s best to just get whichever is the best fit for the shooter and the purpose.
