About The Raleigh Gun Coach

Coach Jon is a nationally certified pistol & rifle instructor, concealed carry handgun instructor, and overall firearms consultant/connoisseur. His training programs offer personalized firearms training specifically oriented to new and young shooters. As a firearms consultant he helps people identify and acquire the proper firearm for their specific needs as well as helps ensure they get the best experiences with their training. If you’ve never owned a gun or been to a range before, Jon could very well be the perfect person to help you get started. Jon has a couple affiliations with local ranges, manufacturers & suppliers, but his opinions are unbiased (as can be) and his priority is serving the needs of his clients and students.

Outside of the structured training classes listed below, private individual instruction is offered at $40 per hour.

Gun Coach vs Firearm Instructor

Differentiating between a coach and an instructor is one part semantics and two parts attitude. Semantically speaking, as mentioned above Jon is a nationally certified pistol instructor, but he prefers to say he’s a coach because of his fun and positive style of teaching.

Here’s a testimonial from Jon regarding how he views his method of teaching.

When I think of a coach, I think back to my younger years, I had some great coaches, they helped shape me as an athlete and as a person. I remember my coaches being very supportive as they helped me grow various skill sets. I also remember my years spent in the military and I think of my instructors, I have nothing but respect & appreciation for them, and I learned a lot from them, but their method of instruction was quite different, failing to learn or failing to properly execute was often met with what we can call, negative reinforcement. This was quite different from all the positive reinforcement I experienced earlier in my life. Personally, I’d rather have an instructor teach me, but that’s not the way I like to teach. So I view myself as a coach and many of my students have told me I seem more like a coach than an instructor, even before I began to verbalize that I felt more like a coach.
