I recently went to Onpoint with a student and had a really good experience. Onpoint is the newest range in the Raleigh area. They have had a bit of a tough start due to Covid and everything that’s happening, but the range really looks like it could soon be the best range in the Triangle. As it stands, they still have to finish getting set up and get all their equipment functional, but I currently have high expectations for them.
Walking In…
Upon walking in I saw how much of their showroom floor is vacant, personally I like this open/empty concept, but it’s currently hard to get your hands on guns & gear and I kind of think once things calm down they may pack a bunch more stuff in there, so we’ll have to wait and see how all that turns out.
The first time shooter experience here was not to bad, a member of the staff lead me over to a tablet where I watched a 3 minute safety video, then initialed a bunch and then gave up more information than I wanted to and BAM it was done and I was ready to get on the range.
On Range…
The range software is a bit complicated, I’m really just a “target goes down range and I shoot it” kinda guy, but these ranges offer all sorts of options, with how you can interact with the targets. My student and I opted out of all that and just did some shooting at 3, 5, 7, 15 & 25 yards. All that being said, the lighting was nice and the range was clean, and the RSO (Matt I think) was quite fun to talk to.
After we left the range we met with an instructor and he certified me for drawing on the range for future visits. I’ll have to add to this part in a later post.
Paying…
The price for taking my student on the range was actually really good. We shared as a lane as non-members for only $25/hour. However, in contrast I can shoot by myself, at two other ranges for just $10 an hour. So, I would say I’m less likely to go to OnPoint alone than I would be willing to go with a student or friend.
Conclusion…
Onpoint has a lot of potential, they’re already a good range, but they could be the best range in the area, we’ll just have to wait and see once they get things finalized. I will put together another review of Onpoint once they get up and running at full speed.
Thanks!
